Family Education Workshop Series at Temple Israel
The purpose of the workshops is to introduce families to aspects of the Jewish religion as well as Jewish culture that can be brought into their homes. Although Judaism and Jewish Culture are the subject matter of the workshops, they are open to the entire community. Anyone who is interested in learning more about the Jewish religion as well as Jewish culture is invited to participate.
The workshops are multi-generational. Simultaneous workshops will be given during each session in the series for children between the ages of 4 and 12, for parents, and for adults who are not participating in the program as parents of a child.
All workshops in the series are free of charge and open to anyone who is interested.

Sunday, December 2, 2007; 2:30 – 4:30 P.M.
“Let’s Read! Understanding Jewish Books and Jewish Libraries”: a hands-on experiential workshop for parents and children to introduce them to Jewish books and how to create their own home Jewish libraries. Families with children will have the opportunity to enroll in a free Jewish Book Club. The workshop will also include a special workshop for adults.
Sunday, January 27, 2008; 2:30 – 4:30 P.M.
“Rhythms and Cycles of the Jewish Calendar Year”: an exciting introduction to the Jewish calendar year for parents and children who live in rural communities that helps families understand the relationship between the Jewish holidays and the seasons of the year in both Israel and New England. Participants will learn how to celebrate the holidays at home using the things that mark the turning of the seasons. The workshop will also have an adult component.
Sunday March 23, 2008; 2:30 – 4:30 P.M.
“Jewish Spring Fever: Agricultural Aspects of Passover”: This workshop for parents and children is a follow-up to the January 27 workshop. Participants are introduced to agricultural and seasonal traditions of Passover that welcome in the spring. The workshop will also have an adult component.
Sunday, April 13, 2008; 2:30 – 4:30 P.M.
“Let’s Read! Understanding Jewish Books and Jewish Libraries, Part II": This workshop continues the process begun on December 2. Parents and children as well as adult participants will be assisted with the continuing development of their home Jewish libraries. Children will be able to share information about the books they have been reading as they make their own ice cream sundaes. Adult participants will learn about the holdings of several Jewish libraries in larger cities. The workshop will also prepare participants for site visits to Jewish libraries in New York and Montreal.
Sunday, May 18, 2008; 2:30 – 4:30 P.M.
“Shavuot: The Feast of the Harvest, The Time of the Great Marriage": This workshop is a continuation of the January 27 and March workshops and introduces parents and children to special agricultural traditions of Shavuot that welcome in the summer harvest season. The will also participate in an experiential learning activity celebrating the marriage of the Jewish people to the Torah, the cornerstone of the festival of Shavuot. This lively workshop will include art, music, and traditional holiday foods. There will also be an adult component to the workshop.
